lyrics

The Camp

Violence and work dictate my
Life, each day more gruesome.
Unceasing brutal hardship
Borne by bodies beaten
Down.

Frail bodies gaunt with hunger
Paled by rampant ailment.
Teeth rotting, bone and flesh scarred
By fist, club, and sediment.

“You must do what we say!
To the ground you’re our slave!
You are machines,
You are the dead.
You will work to death”
Death.

The guards in medalled fatigues
Gorge on bloody fighting.
Commanding inmates to brawl,
Biting, clawing, screaming,
Dying.

The inmates blood bent on
A win at any cost,
Abide the glad spectators’
Lust for more lives lost.

“You must do what we say!
Bone to flesh, you’re our slave!
Swing for his head,
You are the dead.
You will fight to death,
You will break!”

My waking dreams recall
A life I lived long ago,
My brush and canvas free
To paint my destiny.

I still recall the boots and guns,
The invasion of my town,
A silent coup. With paint, I screamed
To protest the tyranny.

At night they cuffed me, a state enemy.
I was gagged by authority.

The ambush hits me in the mouth
With calloused fist.
Dazed, see the faces of the
Guards and inmates mixed.

“You must do what they say!
Just like us, you’re a slave!”
“Obey our will.
You must kill.
You will fight to death!”

“I will not kill,
“I will not break.”
